Devils Drop Season Opener to Rams

 The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's tennis team kicked off their 2009-10 campaign Saturday afternoon, losing to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Philadelphia University, 8-1 at the Abraham J. Salaman Courts on the Rams campus.

The Devils lone win came in singles competition as sophomore Juliet Choi (Clarkstown North HS/New City, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut a memorable one, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Laura Beaver at #6 singles. Another USP player making her collegiate debut was freshman Sara Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.). Durham started her career playing in the #1 singles slot and took the Rams top player, Daniela Rodriguez to three sets, losing the first 6-2 and winning the second set 6-1 before dropping the third and final set 6-3.

Durham also teamed with junior Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) at #1 doubles, losing to Rodriguez and Stephanie Reinke 8-2. The Rams also swept the remaining two doubles matches, with Christin Brzozowski and Brittany Villa scoring an 8-3 win over junior Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.) and senior Danielle Perfetti (Cardinal O'Hara HS/Clifton Heights, Pa.) at #2 doubles and Stephanie Miller and Sarah Harris defeating Choi and sophomore Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary/Blakeslee, Pa.), 8-2 at #3 doubles.

In singles, Hasan lost to Brzozowski, 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles while Frymoyer dropped her #3 singles match to Reinke , by the same 6-3, 6-2 score. Perfetti lost at #4 singles, 6-2, 7-5 to Villa and Jones lost at #5 singles to Miller, 8-2.

The Devils return to action on Monday, September 14, 2009 when they face area Division I school La Salle University at LaSalle at 4:00 p.m.
