Low Scoring Affair as Firebirds Edge Devils

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's basketball team lost their sixth consecutive game Thursday night in Washington D.C., scoring a season low 37 points in a 40-37 loss to the University of the District of Columbia.

The loss drops the Devils record to 9-13.

A pair of seniors led the Devils with Kaitlin DuRoss (Ocean City HS/Sea Isle City, N.J.) netting 13 points (5-12 FG, 3-4 3FG) and Erin Chesnavich (Bishop O'Reilly HS/Pittston, Pa.) adding 12 points (4-7 FG, 4-4 FT) and to go along with a team high nine rebounds.

Lillian McGill led the Firebirds (11-13) with 13 points and 17 rebounds (12 offensive). Nicole Cooper added ten points.

Neither team was spectacular on offense and both teams produced more turnovers than field goals. The Devils made 13 of 41 shots from the field (31.7%) while the Firebirds made 17 field goals while taking 13 more shots due to a total of 20 offensive rebounds, finishing the game shooting 31.5% (17-54). The Devils performed better beyond the arc, making five of 12 (41.7%) shots to UDC's 2-for-11 (18.2%) and at the foul line (6-7 (85.7%) to 4-12 (33.3%)). The Firebirds outrebounded the Devils 37-32 which included a whopping 20-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Both teams dished out ten assists while the Devils committed 24 turnovers to the Firebird's 19.

The Devils held their biggest lead of the game (four points) late in the first half, after junior playmaker Melissa Rotz (Central Dauphin HS/Harrisburg, Pa.) converted a layup- AND-1 to make the score 18-14 with 1:59 left. The Firebirds closed the gap to two 21-19 at the break. McGill's layup to open the second half tied the game at 21-21 and then both teams exchanged points until a triple by junior Alyssa Hamm (Academy Park HS/Sharon Hill, Pa.) gave the Devils a 28-25 lead at the 11:47 mark. A 6-2 spurt by the Firebirds swung the lead the other way, 31-30 with 7:38 left. DuRoss put the Devils back on top with a layup at the 4:17 mark, 34-32 before UDC netted two straight buckets to regain the lead 36-34. Both teams then exchanged three-pointers, making the score 39-37 with 1:14 left. Turnovers by both teams took the clock to under a minute, forcing the Devils to foul and put the Firebirds on the charity stripe. McGill missed the front end of the one-and-one but the Devils failed to box out and UDC got the rebound. Another foul and another trip to line resulted in a single point, making the score 40-37 with 14 ticks left before Jasmine Rich missed the second shot and the Devils again could not get the rebound but almost immediately benefited from a UDC turnover. USP however could not get a shot off as time expired.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, February 20, 2010 in a Central Atlantic collegiate Conference crossover match at Bloomfield College. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
